Preparing for the Holidays

The holidays are here. This is an exciting time that involves traveling, parties, family gatherings and a lot of activities. The added stimulus can be challenging for kids with autism. But this time of year can be memorable for all family members with the right planning. Check out the tips below to ease the stress of the holiday season.

Talk about the holidays and make a plan:
Early preparation is critical for the holidays. Talk to your child and use visuals to help them understand all the activities and events. It is also important to know their limits and plan around it. If they do not like too much stimulus, think of ways to help them. This can be finding a quiet and/or low-lit space for them to calm down. If you know your child does not like large crowds, avoid noisy places where they will be a lot of stimulus.

Space out decorating:
If your child has a difficult time with change, take time introducing decorations. Space out decorating and make sure to engage them in the process. Creating a decorating calendar can also help alleviate any stress.

Engage others:
Talk to family and friends before visiting their homes. Ask if they have a safe space or room for your child if they become overwhelmed. Bring others into the conversation to help and also prepare them for any behavioral incidents.

Bring their favorite items:
Bring your child’s favorite snacks, a blanket or toys that bring them comfort and make them feel more secure.

Talk to them about presents:
Place rules around gifts and talk to your child about presents. Have them practice opening presents and how to take turns. Look to see if stores offer sensory-friendly shopping days to help with the crowded holiday rush.

Enjoy this time!
The holidays can be overwhelming for families but with the right preparation, it is also a magical time. Make sure to be present and enjoy your time with your loved ones.
