How Sleep Makes You a Better Caretaker

Getting 8 hours of sleep is essential for our overall well-being. Modern society does not help as we constantly hear stories from successful people who claim to sleep 4-6 hours a night. Add technology in the mix and getting a good night’s sleep goes out the window. We are always on, always plugged in and always exhausted. Being a caregiver takes an emotional and physical toll and self-care routines are neglected – especially regular sleep cycles.

Caretakers forget to prioritize their own health and wellness. As a result, caretakers are at high risk for depression, irritability, inability to concentrate, anxiety, changes in mood and job dissatisfaction. Not getting enough sleep exacerbates stress side effects. Making sleep a priority and committing to 8 hours a night can decrease caretaker stress.

Here are a few ways to commit to getting a good night’s rest, every night:

  • Find an 8-hour block that works for you to get sleep. Commit to this time every night until it becomes a routine. This can be 9pm-5am, 10pm-6am or 11pm-7am but it needs to happen every night!
  • Make sure to turn off electronics at least one hour before bed.
  • Give yourself one hour between workouts and going to bed.
  • Calm your bedroom surroundings. This can mean aromatherapy, black-out shades and soft music.
  • Read or journal before bed to begin calming your mind down.
  • If you really want to step up your self-care routine, try meditation before bed. Even a 10- minute practice each night can yield better-sleep results.

Sleep deprivation can cause hormonal problems. It impacts our ability to focus. Lack of sleep can increase stress levels making it more difficult to lose weight and can cause injuries when we exercise. Prioritizing quality sleep can make a great difference to our health. Sleep betterment is imperative for caretakers. You will be a better caretaker when you make your health and wellness a priority.
